Students: ' Engineering ' is NOT for You?

SCHOOL-LEAVERS: Do not rush blindly into studying ' Engineering '. It might be a BIG mistake.

IMPORTANT TRUE FACTS about ' Engineering ' that Unsuspecting Students Should Know:

' Engineering ' is not a profession as portrayed, but is recognized as a ' Trade ' in most countries.

You do not need any education to become or practice as an ' Engineer '.

In the U.S., and other countries Train Drivers, Plant Operators and Repairmen, Aircraft Mechanics, etc., and other tradespersons are licensed as ' Engineers ', whereas Graduate Engineers are not. This dispels the idea that 'Engineering' is a profession. It is mainly a ' Trade ' and is advancing rapidly as such with time.

Some Engineer-societies will not seek PROPER Regulation for Engineers, for lame or ulterior reasons.

Because of lack of PROPER Regulation, Criminal Engineers are becoming rampant.

Engineer-societies, through intransigence and lack of Public Relations Skills over the years, have allowed Technical Engineering to be absorbed into Technology with the result that ' Engineering ' is now just regarded as a ' Trade ', internationally.

Most Societies representing Engineers are self-centered, fragmented, and dysfunctional.

It is alleged that some Society Executives are living in the pockets of the Corporate.

Engineer Ethics does not exist in the true sense, and is a farce.

' Rocket Engineers ' in NASA, out of shame, classify themselves as ' Rocket Scientists '.

In general, Scientists get the credit for real Engineering achievements.

Journalists, Doctors, and other Professionals aggressively use every opportunity at their disposal to promote their cause, while Engineers remain dysfunctional and silent.

In the UK, Graduate Engineers advertise themselves as Plumbers with the approval of the so-called professional Institutions.

The Corporate complain that there is a shortage of Engineers, so that they can import cheap labor from India and other such countries.

Some Companies sack Engineers for cheaper labor from countries such as India, and then threaten them with a total loss of severance pay if they do not train these foreign replacements.

In the U.S., vested interests, such as Universities, produce numerous reports stating that there is a shortage of Engineers, despite the contrary, as a recruitment ploy.

Engineers are becoming increasingly the butt of ' greasy-rag ' type jokes and cartoons/videos because of lack of PROPER Regulation, public education, and lack of effective Public Relations by the Societies.

Even White-Collar Companies call their Tradesmen or Women, Engineers. Sample Company List. Many of these companies have Engineers as Executives who make no effort to improve the image of Engineers. In fact, many are complicit in promoting this degrading culture. Some Engineer-employees also shamefully assist.

Engineers design the Media electronic system, TV etc., oversee the operation of it, and then allow it to be used by interested parties to degrade Engineers on an on-going basis.

When will the Societies get the message that continuing to use Professional Engineer as a top-level competency title is flogging a dead horse, without proper regulation? It will NEVER mean anything to most people as its functionality is too obscure. It is used by tradesmen and this will always be the case. If proper regulation cannot be achieved, a New International Single-word Title is the way forward. The latest INGENIOUS official professional title is ' International Professional Engineer ' (INTPE) ....... more of the same. Will 'International Licensed Professional Engineer ' be the next new Title?

Most United Kingdom (UK) Banks classify Engineers as non/semi-skilled workers. In The Royal Corps of Signals (UK), Engineers fall into the category of Soldier Trades.

The Engineer-societies do not encourage Engineers to take pride in their profession or participate in public discussion.

' Engineering ' in the 21st. Century epitomizes 200 years of lack of proper leadership and accountability, conservatism, mismanagement, incompetence, lack of vision, lack of assertiveness, by highly paid Engineer Society Executives whose main interest seems to be that of appeasing the Corporate.

Engineer-societies are in denial and living in a make-believe world and seem oblivious of the real problems of Engineers.

Then they wonder why there is a decline in the numbers studying Engineering. The solution is simple. Tackle the source of the problem aggressively and not just tinker with the symptoms.

Quote: ' Anyone can buy himself a set of ' Spanners ' and an ' Oily Rag ' and call himself an Engineer '

' Engineers Week ' or better known as ' Deception Week ' should add greatly to the unemployment queue and so to the cheap labor market.

App Rutgers University report states that a civil engineer's median salary is $78,560, compared with $165,000 for a physician, $124,750 for a lawyer and $100,310 for a manager. Engineers...wake up!

In the UK, the options for some sort of registration, certification or licensing for Engineers have been looked at and legislation attempted several times over the last century, from statutory and mandatory licensing in various forms to a purely voluntary system. Strangely, for lame or ulterior reasons,
in the past it is the Engineering Institutions that have objected to mandatory systems. Then the Engineer-societies (Engineers) hypocritically complain! ( SEE )

In general, the Engineer-societies operate as Dictators and do not listen to their members. Engineers who complain are ignored, snubbed, and blacklisted. The NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) screen postings to their Forum, and will not allow any that are in any way justifiably critical of the NSPE.

* Then we have the Draper Prize, which, per the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), is recognized as one of the world's preeminent awards for engineering achievement (?). Typically, most people have never heard of it. NAE members and non-members worldwide are eligible to receive the Draper Prize. The NAE state that, *The Draper Prize is awarded annually*. However, it seems it is not being awarded in 2010 due to bad weather! *

* The Engineering Profession could be the most respected profession on this planet, if the highly paid executives got up off their lazy behinds and do what they are paid to do, and stop hiding behind excuses *

The List of Countries with PROPER Regulation for Engineers:

Canada

Malaysia

Two countries, only. It depicts the failings of the Engineer-societies, internationally, over the many decades. Some other countries have Micky Mouse Regulation, such as U.S., U.K., etc.
